Why a SIM (Senior Interim Minister) for RCP?

What is a SIM?

SIM is short for Specialized Interim Minister. Interim ministry is a recognized specialized ministry which involves specific training.

Why utilize a SIM?

There are several situations for which the services of a SIM are especially useful. RCP is in one of those situations: a very long pastorate of 30 years. Experience and research has shown that when a SIM is employed in this type of situation the congregation involved is much more likely to enter upon a productive and positive ministry.

Why is the transition time so important?

The “in-between-pastors-time” is often a time of change filled with uncertainties and opportunities. This is a great time to get our bearings and to unify around a new clear sense of direction. The SIM will facilitate this process.

How long does a SIM serve?

Normally a SIM contract is to serve a congregation for nine to twelve months but it may be extended month by month.  In order to provide the kind of objective help needed, the SIM may not be a former pastor of our church and also may not be considered a candidate for the vacancy.

What does a SIM do?

The work of a specialized interim minister is a lot more than merely "holding the fort" until the arrival of the next minister. We can expect that the SIM will conduct worship, teach, and perform the normal pastoral functions of a minister. Beyond that, the SIM is trained to assist our congregation in the preparation of self-study programs, to evaluate goals and objectives, and to assist in other developmental needs such as exploring a new identity as a congregation, facilitating leadership shifts in the congregation, strengthening denominational linkages, preparing for new pastoral leadership.

Does having an Interim Minister delay getting a new pastor?

No. In fact, the presence of an interim usually smoothes out the search process.  The transition time normally takes about a year whether or not there is an interim pastor.

If you have any questions for the SIM search committee, please contact John Weymer or Diane Cassel.
