History of the Reformed Church

Our denomination, the Reformed Church in America, is the oldest Protestant denomination in America. It arrived in America in 1620 and settled what is now known as New York City. In those days it was known as the "Dutch Reformed Church."

We are part of the "Reformed" family of Christians which includes Presbyterians, the United Church of Christ, and many other denominations. We have the name "Reformed" because our history goes back to the Reformation in the early 1500's, as do our belief statements.

We have been in Plano, Texas for more than 30 years, but the Reformed Church is widely known in other parts of the country. (Our congregation is a part of the Central Iowa Classis, and the Synod of the Hearthland).  some promonent figures of the Reformed church:  The late Dr. Norman Vincent Peale from Marble Collegiate Church in New York City was a Reformed Church minister, as is Dr. Robert Schuller from the Crystal Cathedral in California.

The theme of The Reformed Church in Plano is "Celebrate Life".  We believe that the Good News of the Bible is really good news, and we want our attitudes to be positive and our lives to be full of enthusiasm.  (Read our Vision Statement).

As The Reformed Church in Plano, we are deeply involved in caring for the community. Our senior pastor, Rev. Jack Buteyn, served 6 years as a member of the PISD Board of Trustees. We do our part by participating in the Samaritan Inn, the Women's Shelter, JobNet, The Plano Food Pantry and many other agencies and helping organizations. Our youth program is one of the best organized and highly active Christian programs in the city. We participate actively in exciting programs and also serve by sharing in annual mission trips and in projects with Habitat for Humanity.

Celebrate Life!
